Paxos has been described as the shelter of Poseidon, for the amorous adventures, because of their inexhaustible beauty. In Greek mythology, Poseidon created the island by striking Corfu with his trident, so that he and his wife could have some peace and quiet. So, Paxi Island is appropriate for those who want relax moments during their vacations! Paxi is the smallest island group within the Ionian Islands. As the island was taken by the Venetians at the end of the 14th century, the influence is still alive! It was only the 1864 when the Ionian Island and Paxi in particular were united to Greece. Gaios, the capital and port of Paxos, will leave you a traditional color! The islands Agios Nikolas and Panagia, each with its own characteristics, such as the Venetian fortress in Agios Nikolaos and the monastery and the scenic lighthouse in Panagia, provide physical protection to the port of Gaios! What to see
Holidays in Paxi offer a great variety of activities to do! Olive groves, old soap factory, tubs and Spas are some of the attractions on the island. As Paxi have a long history, the Folklore Museum of Paxi is highly recommended and it is located at the port of Gaios. It was established in 1996 but it is housed in a traditional building of 1906! This museum hosts items from the Prehistoric, the Classical and the Roman times and has a variety of interesting exhibitions!
The international Music Festival takes place every year from late August to early September in Loggos, with the participation of Greek and International musicians! The most popular local product of Paxi Island is the olive oil, so the Olive Oil Museum, which is located in Lakka, would be a poll of attraction for visitors! You will have the opportunity to see the original stone olive press which is dating from 1865!
Nightlife in PaxiIsland is not very common! There are few lounge bars where you can enjoy a nice cocktail and good music, most of them are located in Gaios, and they stay open till a bit after midnight. Religious feasts are taking place every year on Paxi Island on 20th of July and the 15th of August where people are dancing and celebrating, till the late hours, their Sants!
Τhe clear blue of Ionian

Monodendri beach is one of the few organised beaches of Paxos. Pebble in and out but with clear blue waters will amaze you. After enjoying your swim, you could dine in the restaurants that are located just above.
Mogonisi beach is located 5km north of Gaios(the capital of Paxi) and is a sandy and organized with umbrellas beach. It is suitable for families with children and the elderly as the unique features offer a natural and safe environment for visitors.
Logos beach is one of the smallest beaches in Paxi Island. It is located about 8 km north of Gaios and is a very popular beach for families but is a non-organized beach. There are many fish taverns, where you can enjoy your coffee or the local products!
Vrika beach is one of the best beaches of Antipaxos! Exotic beach with sand inside and out is the diamond of Antipaxos. It is organized with sun beds and umbrellas. At 9.30 in the morning there are boats that make routes until 5pm so you can leave whenever you want.
Gastronomy
As Paxos Island is located in the Ionian Sea, the gastronomy is unique! Despite its small size, PaxiIsland has a self finance and one of the main products is the olive oil. During your stay in Paxi Island, it is sure that you will taste the unique olive oil in salads, and in general in all foods.
Another popular product of Paxi Island is the excellent wine! It is produced with high quality and has a wonderful taste, which can you taste in all taverns of the island! A small walk in Gaios and Lakka, will be enough to discover the marvelous taverns and fish- taverns in Paxi Island! Most of them offer seafood and fresh fish, and the traditional dish of Paxi is the fish bourdeto,which is fish with tomato sauce.
Also, you should taste the Old Italian recipe of fish preserved in vinegar, rosemary and raisins! Tsilihourda soup, which is made of sheep ontestine and lemon juice, is also a popular dish for the food lovers! One of the best restaurants in Paxos,is located in Longos and it is called ” ROXI-BAR ” and has an excellent location with sea views where you can enjoy your meal and have a drink! At the port of Gaios, you can taste seafood appetizers at GENESIS restaurant and Mediterranean homemade Greek cuisine!
If you find yourself in Lakka, do not forget to dine at Tavern Diogenes where Mediterranean dishes in combination with a gourmet touch will amaze you! The home made lemonade also worth your try! For a family tavern, visit Pounentes tavern that is located in Lakka, where besides the great food offered, you are going to find yourself in a very friendly environment with great atmosphere and location.
Sports and Activities
An enjoyable activity in Paxos Island is hiking! There are many old footpaths cross the island lead to secluded beaches and hilltops with breathtaking view to the sea. Paxos island is located within an easy access point for other nearby small islands- Paxos is the smallest of the Ionian Islands, but the many small islands and islets around there deserve a ride!
An excursion to the islet of Agios Nikolas, as it is well worth a visit for its breathtaking view and harmonious atmosphere in this amazing place that attracts every visitor! Small boats depart from the port of Gaios very often to this amazing islet! Another proposal is the island of Antipaxos, ‘small garden of Eden’. It is inhabited and with absolutely no sign of modern living, but is very famous for its beautiful beaches and offers some of the best swimming and snorkeling opportunities in Greece! There are water taxis that run from Gaios port to Antipaxos Island almost every hour!
Access is of course possible by sail boat! Ask us to charter a boat of your choice! In the picturesque village of Lakka, lovers of water sports will be enchanted! Diving school with instructors for beginners, ski and windsurf equipment for rent is available!
Moreover, the underwater caves (Graves), which are located in the western part of the island, consisting of about 40 impressive domes and a visit is needed during your summer holidays! As Corfu island is very close, and has a huge variety of water sports, is easily accessible for a day trip.
Access
By airplane: Travelers can fly to Corfu from most European airports or from Athens airport, and then via boat can reach to Paxi. It takes almost 1 hour to fly between Athens and Corfu.
By boat: Paxi island can be reached also, by car from Athens to Igoumenitsa and then board a ferry boat to the port on Paxos, which lasts 1hour and 45 minutes.
